Hierarchy before deformation
Bone Hierarchy should match how the asset will be animated, retargeted, and exported. Extra helper bones are fine if they are documented and ignored safely at export, but unexplained duplicate controls, broken parentage, or inconsistent naming create fragile rigs long before weight painting begins.
Bind pose and joint orientation
Bind Pose must be recoverable after animation tests. Joint Orient errors often hide until a limb is rotated through full range, especially on shoulders, wrists, and hips. Review extreme poses, not just the neutral stance.
Painting and mirroring weights
Mirror Weights is a good starting pass, not the final answer. Asymmetrical clothing, props, or anatomy may require custom correction after mirroring. Smooth Weights should remove harsh pinches without washing out elbow, knee, or shoulder support that needs deliberate deformation.
Skinning checks that matter
Review collapsing volumes, candy-wrapper twisting, stray influences, and clipping on production poses. Skinning quality is not proven by a static viewport. Run the short animation clips, corrective poses, or export round-trip that the receiving team will actually use.
Worked example
A biped shoulder often looks acceptable in T-pose but fails during an overhead reach. The review should include raised arm, cross-body reach, and idle return. If the clavicle and upper-arm weights fight each other, repaint the zone instead of smoothing the whole torso.
